Gemstone Certification Explained: GIA, IGI and Government Labs
A gemstone certificate (or "lab report") is an independent assessment of a stone's identity, weight, dimensions, colour, clarity and — critically — whether it has been treated in any way. For a purchase this significant, the certificate is often more important than the seller's word.
What a proper report actually verifies
- Identification — confirming the stone is what it's sold as (e.g. genuine corundum for a sapphire, not a doublet or synthetic).
- Origin (where determinable) — e.g. Ceylon, Burmese, or Kashmir sapphire; Zambian, Colombian or Panna-source emerald.
- Treatment status — whether the stone has been heated, irradiated, dyed, oiled, or is untreated/natural.
- Weight and measurements — carat weight and precise dimensions.
The major labs
- GIA (Gemological Institute of America) — widely regarded as the strictest and most globally trusted standard, particularly for diamonds and coloured stones alike.
- IGI (International Gemological Institute) — one of the largest certification networks worldwide, with labs across multiple countries including India.
- Government-accredited labs — India-based labs operating under government or GJEPC (Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council) oversight, commonly used for stones sold domestically.
- GJEPC — not a testing lab itself, but the industry body that promotes trade standards and accredits Indian gem and jewellery exporters.
Why this matters for astrological use
If you're buying a gemstone for astrological purposes specifically, treatment status isn't a cosmetic detail — many astrologers hold that a heated, dyed or synthetic stone doesn't carry the same planetary influence as a natural, untreated one. Always check that the certificate explicitly states "natural" and "unheated" (or "no indications of heating") rather than just naming the gem species.
Every stone we sell ships with an independent lab report and a tamper-proof certificate of authenticity, so you can verify exactly what you're getting before it ever reaches your hands.
