Blue Sapphire (Neelam): Benefits, Who Should Wear It, and How to Spot a Genuine Stone

Blue Sapphire, known as Neelam in Hindi, is the gemstone associated with Saturn (Shani) in Vedic astrology — widely considered the most potent of the Navaratna, capable of producing results faster than any other stone, for good or for ill.

Because Saturn's influence is considered so strong, most astrologers recommend a short trial period (often three to seven days) before committing to wearing a Blue Sapphire continuously, and recommend it primarily to those whose birth chart shows Saturn as a functional benefic — not universally.

Origin and colour

Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphires are prized for a bright, evenly saturated cornflower-blue; Kashmir sapphires (now rare) for a velvety, slightly darker blue; and Burmese/Thai stones can run darker still. Colour, clarity and the absence of heat treatment all factor into value.

How to spot a genuine, untreated stone

• Ask for lab certification. A legitimate stone should come with a report from an accredited lab (GIA, IGI, or a recognised government lab) stating origin and treatment status.
• Check for "unheated" / "natural" on the certificate. The vast majority of sapphires on the market are heat-treated to improve colour and clarity — which is a legitimate, disclosed practice, but a different (and less expensive) stone from a natural, unheated sapphire.
• Be wary of "too good to be true" pricing. A large, richly-coloured, certified-unheated sapphire is a genuinely rare stone. Steep discounts on stones marketed as premium and untreated are a red flag.
• Look for natural inclusions. Completely flawless-looking blue stones at low price points are more likely glass, synthetic corundum, or a cheaper doublet than a fine natural sapphire.
